The kingdom of Lesotho is a land locked country surrounded by South Africa. It is a mountainous country with a population of 2.2 million people. More than half of the population, mainly in rural area, lives in deepening poverty. It is estimated between 1987 and 1995, that the population below the national income poverty was 58 percent. The situation is worsening following the increased retrenchment of migrant workers in the neighboring South African mining industry.
Most of the reforms and processes going on in Lesotho provides a window of opportunity for ESAFF Lesotho (small-scale farmers) to influence them so that they impact positively for the benefit of rural development.
